Chapter 8

Tim grimaced as he boosted himself into an upright position and pulled back the curtain to see if he could spot who or whatever was making its way toward him but saw nothing. “Hello? Is anyone there?” He heard something bump against the opposite side of the camper and called out again, but no one answered. Wildlife was plentiful in this area, and not all of it was harmless deer and squirrels. Realizing just how bad his predicament was and knowing he was in no shape to take a bear or coyote out in hand-to-hand combat if it managed to break into the camper, Tim decided to take the risk of getting up to check things out and to get his shotgun.

He tried to muffle the moans of agony as he pulled himself into a standing position, knowing predators often stalked wounded prey. Sweat broke out across his body and dampened his shirt, stars appearing in his vision to warn him to stay still unless he wanted to pass out. He closed his eyes and leaned heavily against the fridge, and took several steadying breaths as he waited for his head to stop spinning. The sound of something moving outside the banged-up camper made him spring into action, and he hopped painfully toward the window above the sink to see if he could catch a glimpse of what he was dealing with. Seeing nothing, he hobbled his way to the closet to retrieve his rifle, just in case.

Gun in hand, Tim grabbed the box of shells that had fallen to the closet floor, loaded the weapon, and flipped the safety switch, ready to fire, if needed. He closed the closet door and pushed the curtain covering the door’s window aside, and caught a glimpse of an antler as it rounded the corner and slipped into the shadow of the tree they’d crashed into.

He breathed a sigh of relief as he decided it was likely a yearling moose just being nosey but locked the camper’s door and shoved the heavy cooler against the door, just in case. Next time it might be a bear trying to break in from the odors of their food or a coyote deciding he’d make an easy lunch. Covered in sweat, he hopped back toward the relative comfort of his bed, put the safety switch of his gun to the locked position, and laid it next to him. Tim reached for the bottle of ibuprofen that Jade had left on the counter for him and decided taking two of the pills a little early was definitely warranted.
